ABOUT KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY ~ Danielle Landes knew that knitting was historically a community pastime that became a solitary activity. She launched World Wide Knit in Public Day in 2005 as a local event ‒ It attracted knitters from 25 localities. Her idea spread each year and has since become a global phenomenon! 1125 venues in 54 countries participated in 2017. Astrid Salling, of Copenhagen, Denmark, has organized WWKiP Day in June each year since 2011.
Fantastic Fibers Miami has hosted this event locally since 2016, bringing together diverse people from across South Florida. This specific day is designated as a great way to get your yarn, get out of your house with and connect with others like you. In Florida, we will Knit In Public in the air conditioned comfort of the mall.
Knit, crochet, embroider, weave ‒ it is all about the threads of connectivity! See you there!
Field trip! This month we are marching out to the Lowe Art Museum on the UM campus to tour the collections and current exhibition, Antellian Visions: Maps and the Making of the Caribbean. We are sure to be inspired by the vast works at the Lowe. Please join us!

MOCA has been most generous in offering us the opportunity to meet in the Pavilion Gallery in support of their MOCA Teen programming. Please plan to stay for the Artist Talk immediately following at 5:30, given by Gregory Pierre-Louis, a MOCA Teen artist extraordinaire who curated the exhibition Fresh Threads, and whose excellent mixed meda work is on view. See photo of his work (above) Detail of Gregory Pierre-Louis x OREOFLIP / “Significant: Self”, 2018 / Acrylic, oil, fabric on canvas / 48 x 48 inches Read about it here on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1993002244292066/
This month, Fantastic Fibers Miami is all about the Yarn Bomb at MOCA and the Fresh Threads exhibition in the Pavilion Gallery. This show is because of the MOCA Teen art program and their work, as inspired by Fantastic Fibers Miami members, Morgan Lorenzo who organized all of it; Dana Yancoskie who contributed hours and hours, miles of crochet, and invaluabe pillar calculations and installation advice; and me with my knitted yarn bomb strips to which I added more, plus hours and hours of time teaching the kids to knit. They were great.
Our Artist Books from the 2017 Round Robin Project are also on view in the gallery. They are very cool.
Plan to bring your good ideas for group projects for the guild. Do you have something you have been working on? Show us!
Tell us about exhbitions you are in, classes you are teaching, projects you have planned.
We will be discussing upcoming yarn bombs and other projects. Including – World Wide Knit in Public Day has just been announced! June 9. Details as they become available..
Membership dues to Fantastic Fibers Miami are a mere $30 per year. Please bring cash or a check to join or renew your membership for 2018 so you will remain on this list to be part of an active, dynamic community of fiber and textile people of all persuasions. Have fun, make stuff.
MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, is located at 770 NE 125th Street. Plenty of Free parking!
