Knit in Public Day June 9

Knit, fiber art, knit in public day, hand knit, textilesIt’s that time of the year again!

Time for World Wide Knit in Public Day ~ June 9, 2018!

 SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2018 from 1– 4 PM

Meet us at the Aventura Mall  lower level near Diane Von Furstenburg (# 803) and Ann Taylor (# 733A)

ABOUT KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY ~ Danielle Landes knew that knitting was historically a community pastime that became a solitary activity. She launched World Wide Knit in Public Day in 2005 as a local event ‒ It attracted knitters from 25 localities. Her idea spread each year and has since become a global phenomenon! 1125 venues in 54 countries participated in 2017.  Astrid Salling, of Copenhagen, Denmark, has organized WWKiP Day in June each year since 2011.

Fantastic Fibers Miami has hosted this event locally since 2016, bringing together diverse people from across South Florida. This specific day is designated as a great way to get your yarn, get out of your house with and connect with others like you. In Florida, we will Knit In Public in the air conditioned comfort of the mall.

Knit, crochet, embroider, weave ‒ it is all about the threads of connectivity! See you there!

February Meeting

Significant Self

This month, Fantastic Fibers Miami will meet at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 770 NE 125th Street, North Miami.

Meeting time for this meeting is 4:00 PM

MOCA has been most generous in offering us the opportunity to meet in the Pavilion Gallery in support of their MOCA Teen programming. Please plan to stay for the Artist Talk immediately following at 5:30, given by Gregory Pierre-Louis, a MOCA Teen artist extraordinaire who curated the exhibition Fresh Threads, and whose excellent mixed meda work is on view. See photo of his work (above) Detail of Gregory Pierre-Louis x OREOFLIP / “Significant: Self”, 2018 / Acrylic, oil, fabric on canvas / 48 x 48 inches Read about it here on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1993002244292066/
This month, Fantastic Fibers Miami is all about the Yarn Bomb at MOCA and the Fresh Threads exhibition in the Pavilion Gallery. This show is because of the MOCA Teen art program and their work, as inspired by Fantastic Fibers Miami members, Morgan Lorenzo who organized all of it; Dana Yancoskie who contributed hours and hours, miles of crochet, and invaluabe pillar calculations and installation advice; and me with my knitted yarn bomb strips to which I added more, plus hours and hours of time teaching the kids to knit. They were great.
Our Artist Books from the 2017 Round Robin Project are also on view in the gallery. They are very cool.
Meeting Agenda
Plan to bring your good ideas for group projects for the guild. Do you have something you have been working on? Show us!
Tell us about exhbitions you are in, classes you are teaching, projects you have planned.
We will be discussing upcoming yarn bombs and other projects. Including – World Wide Knit in Public Day has just been announced! June 9. Details as they become available..
Membership dues to Fantastic Fibers Miami are a mere $30 per year. Please bring cash or a check to join or renew your membership for 2018 so you will remain on this list to be part of an active, dynamic community of fiber and textile people of all persuasions. Have fun, make stuff.

Yarn Bombing at MOCA Jan 26, 2018

MOCA – columns

Fantastic Fibers Miami met in November to finalize the plans for our yarn bombing (YB) event scheduled at MOCA on Friday night, January 26, 2018.

This project ties together our Artist Books – which are awesome and amazing – with MOCA’s after school program for kids and is coordinated by our very own incredible Morgan. Thank You Morgan!

Between now and end of January, we will be working with Morgan and the kids to get them involved in the many facets of fiber arts.

We will teach them to knit and crochet so they can contribute work to the YB on Jan 26.

Artist Book page

We will also do pages for artist books with the kids so they can create their own mixed media fiber art pages for their own artist books.

MOCA Pavilion

Our artist books and theirs will be displayed in the MOCA Pavilion on January 26 when we YB the pillars.

We have a schedule for working with Morgan and the kids from 3:30 – 5:30 on MWF in December as follows:

Dec 11 Susan         Dec 13 Pamela                   Dec 15 Dana

Dec 18 Susan         Dec 20 Pamela                   Dec 22 Dana

January dates are open and we need committed volunteers: Jan 8, 10, 12 //Jan *17, 19 // Jan 22, 24 (*no kids on the 15th – MLK day)

January 26 is the YB event in conjunction with Jazz at MOCA featuring Troy Roberts on sax – so there will be live music with Troy Roberts on sax and a crowd! YAY!

Please be at MOCA on the 26th at 3:30 to get ready to YB with the kids.

Wrapped method of YB

The pillars are quite large so if you or anyone  you know can knit or crochet panels to contribute or long scarf-like items to wrap, we will be most grateful. Please let me know! Thank you!
